The Soul-Felt Depth of Expression: ‘To Be Sound’
Early today I was reading from an older book I use for reference. My topic at the moment was white sage, also known as salvia.
The origin of the word salvia is salvere, and this means “to be sound”. This definition quite literally resonated with me, as I chuckle at the this statement for its pun-like qualities. In all honesty it did resonate, my thoughts lingered like the tone of a deep drum resonates long after the beater touches the hide.
“To be sound” – I remember this from so many times in life. A horse was considered “sound” if it was healthy and strong. We have the expression, to be of “sound mind and spirit”.
Philosopher John Locke said back in the 17th century, “A sound mind in a sound body is a short but full description of a happy state in this world”.
Is there correlation between drumming and health? This morning I see more clearly the connection. This topic quickly moved from a plant to an exploration of the healing arts, but that is not a surprise when we return to the original topic of white sage used for smudging and energy healing.
When we are healthy and strong and body, mind, emotion and spirit our soul resonates within the body and our voice carries this unique signature in our every word. We are interconnected and we are here to express ourselves, share with others, listen, and feel the vibration through sound and touch.
The Healing Drum Retreat is a celebration of living. Our focus is to make joyous sound, to unlock the barriers to complete expression of the soul. Do we achieve this spiritual expression through thought alone? No. Can we experience this sensation of spiritual awakening in a moment? Perhaps. Our intent with the Healing Drum Retreat is to create a space where you can step into the harmonious state of sound mind and sound body, and maintain that state long enough to make it a practice. That is the key, the practice of being.
