Earth Day Thank You For The Ground We Stand On
Today is Earth Day, an event started 40 years ago in a turbulent way. The Cuyahoga river in Ohio actually caught on fire from the intense pollution. Earth day began as a demonstration, a protest. When we gather in a supporting intent we can change the world. Look at how far we have come!
Our advances in technology has grown so dramatically over the past several decades. Our desire for convenience rather than ecology has grown as well. We have an abundance of single servings and excessive packaging, meaning a great deal of waste. It is difficult for us to give up any of our conveniences, but we can help balance by recycling, donating, and reusing what we have.
Earth Day: what can we make of this opportunity? Let’s be creative. The earth is our home, and has always been there for us. It is the ground we stand on, the source of everything that nourishes. The earth gives us the delicate interface between spirit and the density of the earth we call our atmosphere. What do we give in return?
Imagine, for a moment, that “everything you do returns to you”. This concept doesn’t take much stretching of our thoughts because it is true. Let’s start with the obvious and big: pollution. It’s easy for us to say, “I didn’t do it”, but we all contribute to it. Maybe it is not practical to stop driving cars or using plastics that do not degrade like natural fibers. We can think about those little things, like the chemicals we use in our homes. I do not leave it to anyone to tell me that something is safe to use when I can read on the back of the bottle to “use in a well ventilated place” or “do not use when pets or children are present”.
We can also give to the earth. Recycle, garden, compost, pray. Yes, pray.
“Let us give thanks to the earth beneath our feet, the many sights and sounds that allow us interactivity, and the touch that comes only from this dense planet. I open my heart to an extent beyond what I have ever done before, and express my love to this earth for this opportunity for this amazing experience. Aho.”
