Traveling Home – Rock Roll and Rattle
Rattles are a native tradition, used in ceremonies and healing. The purpose of rattles varies: during a drum prayer you can rattle to emphasis your prayer to creator. You can shake off energy, using the rattle as a healing tool. Using a flute, rattle and drum together opens the heart and expresses the soul energy to source and self.
Rattles are made from many different materials, including plastics and other manufactured materials. In the Healing Drum Retreat we focus on natural materials that contain spirit and life: Rawhide rattles with beans, beads, and other life-giving materials, with wood and leather handles.
Our rawhide comes from our drum making surplus, so your rattle may be made of elk, buffalo or horse.
As a drum maker we always have pieces of hide left over. It is tradition to use as much of our materials as possible, leaving little to waste. This is a custom followed by many native cultures, so the concept of “going green” is nothing new. Everything old is new again!
The rattle can be formed into animal shape, or any freeform style. Some look like gourds, some like snakes, stars or anything else that comes through imagination.
We’ll be making medium sized rattles, starting Saturday morning and working on the various stages through Sunday, finishing with a rattling concert to close the Healing Drum Retreat.
This special rattle making class is a part of the Healing Drum Retreat, at no addition cost unless you want to make additional rattles to take home. Extra rattle kits are $15 each. You must be registered for the Healing Drum Retreat to be a part of the rattle making class, and attend both Saturday and Sunday.
The Healing Drum Retreat is a value beyond value with this rattle making class, Reiki training, Sacred Space Energy Clearing training, and more. Lodging Friday and Saturday night and meals are included.
