The process of building the big drum
In making the new big drum for this upcoming Healing Drum Retreat, we had a wonderful group of people participating. Each person played a part in building this drum.
The hides soaks all morning, giving them the flexibility to stretch over the frame. As we completed the healing session that opened our event the hides were pulled from the water, in perfect condition for stretching. “As the hide dries it tightens over the frame, creating the resonant tone that makes it a Healing Drum”, shared Estee.
“The intention we held throughout the day, during the process of building the drum, will remain within the drum throughout its lifetime”, shares Kaye.
The buffalo hide was stretched, then holes punched to weave the lacing through. “That lacing was so long we had to go across the room twice to stretch it!” We worked as a team to run the rawhide lacing through the holes, and after a few rounds of loosening and retightening the lacing we finally had the drum “properly dressed”.
Join us at the next Healing Drum Retreat for a group drumming session. We hope to have three big drums at the retreat, and boy do we have plans for a fun, healing, spiritual experience!
You can sign up for the Healing Drum Retreat by calling Kaye at 260-785-4879, or Estee at 206-878-3513. Here’s a special offer: sign up by June 14th, and you will receive a discount!
