News Flash! Big Drum Update!!
A drum rests suspended from the ceiling of my house, and each day I hear a resonant, deep, “pop” as the buffalo hide dries and the rawhide tightens. Each day I look over this beautiful creation, and remember the group effort that made this drum what it is today.
The tone is deep, with each side carrying its rich vibrato. The coloring and patterns lead to visions of many totems and images of the earth, such as the bubbles created by the bursting of an ocean wave.
Now that the hides are dry I can tap on the drum and hear it’s resonant tone, wondering what it will sound like as it rests on its frame in a large auditorium. In fact, we will have quite an experience when we share a room with the two other big drums.
Until that day, fast approaching, the drum rests suspended in the air in a place of honor.
