An Example of the Symbolic Nature of Totems
Just the other day while sharing a ride with a friend we found an owl feather in the car. This car was closed up, and locked, and there was no way this feather could have been put there by intent. It just appeared.
Who was this feather for, the owner of the car, or the person that found it? What did it represent? I was asked what this meant, and I pondered.
Some tribes believe that an owl feather left for someone is ill-will, and sometimes a symbol of death. Owls do fly at night, and are a creature of darkness. In my belief I saw this as a sign of hidden knowledge. Perhaps this was a sign of the death of a false belief or an old way of thinking. Perhaps spirit was simply acknowledging this positive change.
The owner of the car truly has experienced a change in many life beliefs. He spoke with Estee at a summer event last year, and a few simple words brought a turning point because he was ready to make his next step. After many years of guidance and support in my work with him I have seen this man make amazing transitions. I am very happy with him in his self empowerment.
Totems can be with you for a lifetime, or for a brief period of time when their support is needed. For this man the owl totem brought him a message of transition, that he is truly on his path. The message of a totem can come in something as simple as a feather, a thought, or a vision.
