Medicine Bags: A Gift of Gratitude
During the Summer Solstice 2008 Healing Drum Retreat we offered a medicine bag making class. This event was open to all attendee’s for the weekend event, and was open to the public on Friday evening as well.
We thank Billy for his design, ideas, and knowledge, and supporting us in this event. He brought years of study and practice to this event. Everyone who made a medicine bag, or prayer bag, felt a sense of grace and respect for the symbolic meaning of the medicine bag.
Some of us made additional medicine bags. One was made for ChapLady Lori, who graciously donated leather scraps from her business for use at our event and for use by the children in Unity Works. Kaye, our drum making teacher, commented that she could tell the quality and care that goes into Lori’s hand-crafted work just by looking at the scraps! Honor, pride and dedication in service are traits we don’t see quite so often these days, but Lori brings these qualities into her work and family life each and every day. Her medicine bag was gifted to her to honor her dedication to the care of horses, and her rescue of abandoned two-day old kittens that she raised. Thanks for being such an inspiration, Lori!
Following the Healing Drum Retreat Lori had a blessed event at her ranch: the birth of Hudson Bay, a beautiful colt. This was a great opportunity to see the newborn and give Lori her medicine bag. Lori was surprised and honored to be remembered during our event, and was delighted with her medicine bag. She was given instruction about adding her own personal items, and to keep her bag private.
The medicine bag class was great fun and and wonderful way to honor and experience a tradition.
